How to Receive XRP on a Cold Wallet, Including the 1 XRP Activation

An ELLIPAL Titan 2.0 and an ELLIPAL X Card on a dark stone pedestal

Main Takeaway: Receiving XRP on a cold wallet is an on-chain payment to an address your wallet generates, and it needs no device signature. The first payment is the one that differs. A new address has no XRP Ledger account until it receives at least 1 XRP, the base reserve, so a smaller first payment fails.

Quick Reference

Base reserve The XRP an address must hold to exist on the XRP Ledger. On Mainnet it is currently 1 XRP, and it cannot be sent out.
Destination tag A number that tells a shared exchange address which customer to credit. A personal wallet address generally does not need one.
Account not found What an XRP Ledger explorer shows for an address that has not been activated yet.
Small deposit test Coinbase's ownership check, which asks your wallet to send an exact amount back out.

How do you receive XRP on an ELLIPAL cold wallet?

To receive XRP on a cold wallet, you share an address from your ELLIPAL wallet. The sender then pays to it on the XRP Ledger. Receiving needs no action on the device, because the address is public while the private key stays offline. For wallet options, see the ELLIPAL XRP wallet page.

  1. In the ELLIPAL App, tap Receive and select XRP.
  2. Check the address. ELLIPAL Titan 2.0 also shows it on the device screen, and with ELLIPAL X Card the App shows it.
  3. Paste the address into the exchange's XRP withdrawal screen and compare the first and last four characters.
  4. Leave the destination tag empty if the field is optional.
  5. If the address is new, make the first payment more than 1 XRP.
  6. Copy the transaction hash, look it up on an XRP Ledger explorer, then refresh the App.

Why the first XRP payment to a new address works differently

The XRP Ledger creates an account only when an address receives the reserve. The XRPL documentation puts it plainly: "To fund a new address, you must receive enough XRP at that address to meet the reserve requirement." The current Mainnet figures are a 1 XRP base reserve plus 0.2 XRP for each object the account owns, such as a trust line. Validators can change these figures through fee voting.

A payment below the reserve to an address with no account fails with the result code tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP. The documentation describes it as a transaction "not sending enough XRP to create it". Some platforms check before sending and call the address invalid, as the Robinhood guide explains. An explorer lookup on the same address returns account not found. Every new address looks like this before activation, so the fix is a larger first payment, and the address itself is fine.

The reserve stays locked while the account exists. "You cannot send the reserved XRP to others," the documentation says, although the reserve can still pay transaction fees. A wallet holding exactly 1 XRP therefore shows a balance with nothing available to send.

Which situation matches yours

  1. First XRP to a new address: send more than 1 XRP, then the rest once it shows in the ELLIPAL App.
  2. The platform requires a destination tag: ELLIPAL's support guide says a simple number such as 0 is accepted for a personal wallet.
  3. Coinbase asks for a small deposit test: the address must already hold more than 1 XRP, because the reserve cannot be sent. The Coinbase guide walks through the check.
  4. Sending XRP back to an exchange: copy both the address and the destination tag the exchange shows. Coinbase warns that a missing tag can lead to "the funds not being received".

Where the ELLIPAL wallet fits

An ELLIPAL wallet is where your XRP lands after it leaves the exchange. ELLIPAL Titan 2.0 has no Bluetooth, no WiFi and no USB data connection, so transactions travel by QR code. ELLIPAL X Card is an NFC cold wallet in card form, with no battery and no port. You sign by tapping it to your phone. Different tools. Same mission. Both back up to a BIP39 seed phrase, the word list standard most wallets use for recovery.

FAQ: Receiving XRP on a Cold Wallet

Why can't I send all of my XRP out of the wallet?

The base reserve stays with the account while it exists. The XRPL documentation notes that "you can recover some of the XRP by deleting the account", so the reserve is a deposit you can partly reclaim.

Is it safe to keep XRP on a hardware wallet?

Your XRP is recorded on the XRP Ledger, and the wallet holds the private key that signs for it. ELLIPAL generates and stores private keys offline. Receiving needs no signature, so the care goes into the address. See the common receiving issues.

How much does it cost to receive XRP?

Nothing on your side. The sender pays the network fee, and an exchange may add its own withdrawal fee, shown on its withdrawal screen. The 1 XRP reserve is a deposit that stays in your account.

What happens to my XRP if I lose the ELLIPAL device?

The seed phrase from setup restores the same XRP account on a replacement device, reserve included. Keep that backup offline, in a place only you control. Here is how to back up a hardware wallet.
